Stephen Oleskey Receives Standing Ovation for Rhode Island Bar Keynote Address

Boston, Massachusetts – July 24, 2014 – Stephen H. Oleskey, Of Counsel in the Boston office of Hiscock & Barclay, received a standing ovation following his keynote address at the annual meeting of the Rhode Island Bar Association.

In his address, Oleskey told of his pro bono work for six men imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay Prison in Cuba. Five of the men were eventually released by federal court habeas grant after the first-ever habeas trial at the facility. The sixth was released through administrative clearance by the Administration of President Barack Obama.

After discussing his nearly decade-long work on the Guantanamo cases, Oleskey asked the members of the Rhode Island Bar Association what they thought of military commissions as alternatives to federal courts, prisoners declared "too dangerous to release," and keeping Guantanamo open. Oleskey also asked whether anyone in his audience was interested in representing any of the 149 who remain held at the facility.
