Connie Cahill, Barclay Damon’s managing partner, is quoted extensively in the Law.com article “Regional NY Firms Have Ambitious Growth Plans, Despite Associate Challenges.”
Christine Simmons, the article’s author, said:
At 300-lawyer Barclay Damon, the firm’s expenses were predictably higher last year than 2020—when all travel and conferences were canceled—but the firm also increased its revenue last year, said managing partner Connie Cahill.
The firm, which has about 250 lawyers in upstate New York offices, is now focused on the increasing head count in Manhattan, Boston, and New Haven, Connecticut, which collectively have 42 lawyers. “We’re talking with a number of laterals across those three offices,” Cahill said.
The author went on to note that “earlier this month, the firm added Keith Costa, a former Faegre Drinker bankruptcy partner, in New York City.”
The article also says:
Barclay Damon now has 17 lawyers in New York City, compared with 11 when it started 2021 . . . The firm’s expansion efforts in the Northeast come after Barclay Damon brought on a group of lawyers from now-defunct firm LeClairRyan in late 2019.
While a firm merger is possible, especially with a firm that is aligned in practice areas and quality of talent, Barclay Damon is not involved in any large merger talks now, Cahill said. The firm is also open to individuals, lateral groups, and small firm acquisitions, she said.
About attracting associates, Law.com said, “While money is always going to be important, ‘associates are looking for growth, they want to see a path,’ Cahill said. The firm makes sure associates are involved in client pitches, and it provides a writing program for associates.”
