On July 31, 2024, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed into law “An Act Relative to Salary Range Transparency” to increase pay equity and transparency by requiring employers to disclose salary ranges and protecting employees’ right to ask for salary ranges at certain times.
In 2023, the gender wage gap in Greater Boston was 21 cents per dollar, according to the Boston Women's Workforce Council. Black women faced a 54-cent wage gap, while Hispanic and Latina women faced a 52-cent wage gap, and Asian women faced a 19-cent wage gap.
The new law requires employers with 25 or more employees to post pay ranges with job openings. In addition, it requires employers with more than 100 employees to file copies of federally-required equal employment data with the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.
The Governor’s signature means employers will need to start including pay ranges in their job posting by July 31, 2025.
More information about the Massachusetts Pay Transparency Bill is available in our legal alert from July 29, 2024.
