Energy-Environmental Gilberti Firm Combines With Barclay Damon

Firm Adds 11 attorneys based in Syracuse focused on large development projects

SYRACUSE, NY, Nov. 1, 2017 – Barclay Damon LLP today announced its combination with the energy-environmental firm Gilberti Stinziano Heintz & Smith, P.C.

Effective today, 11 attorneys of the Syracuse-based Gilberti firm and its paralegals and staff joined Barclay Damon.

Over its 45-year history, the Gilberti firm developed exceptional boutique expertise in a number of practices, including complex, large-project development and siting; environmental law; energy production; state regulation; real property tax and condemnation; corporate; litigation; and commercial real estate.

The firm has a deep understanding of strategically significant industries, including energy, mining, municipal, regional, and state government, and has worked for Fortune 100 companies operating in New York State.

The continued expansion of the Firm's Energy practice follows Barclay Damon's recent addition to its renewable energy team of four attorneys from the Framingham, MA-based firm McCauley Lyman.

"The combination of this highly successful firm with Barclay Damon is great news for clients of both firms, adding experience and depth to the already-stellar clients on both sides," said John P. Langan, Barclay Damon's managing partner. "With Gilberti's culture of providing outstanding service and results for clients – which mirrors our own – we know this expansion is going to add real value to the services we offer."

Gilberti's practice and industry focus align uniquely with areas of strength at Barclay Damon.

"We could not be more excited about this move," said former CEO William J. Gilberti, Jr., now a partner at Barclay Damon. "To join a firm of Barclay Damon's caliber, with excellent attorneys and well-established practices that not only parallel our practices at Gilberti, but also offer additional key services for clients, is the optimal next step for us."

"To be part of a firm with this breadth and depth of practice expertise in areas beyond our core focus, such as in tax, intellectual property, public finance, health-care, labor and employment, and more, will be invaluable to the clients we serve," Gilberti said.

Barclay Damon formed in 2015 with the combination of Hiscock & Barclay and Damon Morey, of Buffalo. The firm has offices throughout the major cities of New York State and in Toronto, Boston, Washington, DC, and Newark. At 275 lawyers, Barclay Damon is the largest law firm in the Northeastern United States not centered in a major market.

During the build out of additional offices in Barclay Damon Tower, the former Gilberti attorneys and staff will use their existing offices at 555 E. Genesee St. in Syracuse as swing space. After construction is complete, all lawyers and staff from the combination will operate from Barclay Damon Tower.

The additional office location will not impede the immediate and complete integration of attorneys and staff of both firms, as the enhanced service teams will continue providing seamless, integrated service to clients, sourcing strengths and capabilities from both sides. The firms' staff members are also working across origin-firm lines to form new and productive working relationships.

"One of our firm's greatest strengths, serving as a significant competitive advantage, is that we know how to quickly evaluate, onboard, and integrate talent developed from a robust and continuing lateral partner program," Langan said. "You don't go from 50 lawyers to more than 275 lawyers without having figured out these issues."

"We are proud of our history of success in crafting strategic mergers like this one, and through diligent planning and integration steps, making them work for the benefit of the firm and – most importantly – for our clients. We look forward to an exciting future with the Gilberti team."

Barclay Damon LLP, listed as a "Top 250 Firm" by The National Law Journal, is a full-service law firm with offices throughout the major cities of New York State and in Toronto, Boston, Washington, DC, and Newark. At 275 lawyers, Barclay Damon is the largest law firm in the Northeastern United States that is not centered in a major market.
