Barclay Damon announces, effective April 8, a five-person intellectual property team from Murtha Cullina, led by practice leader Tony Gangemi, has joined Barclay Damon’s Patents & Prosecution; Intellectual Property Litigation; Trademarks, Copyrights & Licensing; and Higher Education Practice Areas in New Haven. In addition to Tony, the group includes Ben White, partner; Donna Lizotte, of counsel; Robert Kasten, patent agent; and IP paralegal Liza Blair.

Gangemi brings a substantial book of business and high-performing team with decades of experience in protecting and maximizing clients’ IP assets. Clients joining Barclay Damon range from Fortune 500 companies and prominent colleges and universities to individuals in a variety of technology industries, including clean technology, medical devices, software and business methods, bioscience and life sciences, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, data, privacy, and health care IT, to name a few. Marquee tier-one research institutions, including multiple Ivy League universities, headline a premier client list in the higher education space.

“This group’s extensive experience, especially in key technical areas, is impressive and will be a great addition to Barclay Damon’s existing IP team of 16 timekeepers, including eight registered patent attorneys across multiple technical disciplines, who serve clients in all aspects of IP, including patents, litigation, licensing, and trademarks. The team Tony is bringing has educational and work experience outside the legal industry, which gives them the unique ability to relate to clients, allowing them to deliver top-notch service while keeping clients’ business goals in mind,” said Denis Sullivan, Intellectual Property Practice Group leader. “Their skills will also be of great benefit to attorneys throughout Barclay Damon’s other practice areas and industry teams, such as Higher Education, Corporate, Data Security & Technology, Financial Institutions & Lending, Telecommunications, and Commercial Litigation.”

The recent addition of two additional associates in the Intellectual Property Practice Group, Celine Dorsainvil in New York City and Dhruthi Batchu in Boston, further demonstrates the firm’s commitment to continued IP growth and client support.

Gangemi said he is excited by the move of his team and IP practice to Barclay Damon’s New Haven office, noting, “The firm’s existing investment and commitment to a large and high-performing intellectual property practice that is national in scope is a perfect fit for the clients my team has serviced for years. We anticipate immediate growth of our practice with the built-in synergies at Barclay Damon of a large Higher Education Practice Area and culture that provides matter staffing and support across the platform based on the best timekeepers to serve a client’s needs.”

Lizz Acee, managing director for major market offices, said, “We’re delighted to welcome Tony, Ben, Donna, Robert, and Liza to the firm. We have seen a monumental penetration in the higher ed space with former general counsel of Syracuse University, Dan French, returning to the firm to co-chair the Higher Education Practice Area. The fit of Tony’s team within our existing growth strategies is just extraordinary. Expanding our IP service offerings in the larger markets has been a longstanding focus of the firm, and Tony’s team allows us to offer IP services not only in the Connecticut, New York metro area, and Boson markets but across the platform and beyond.”

For over two decades, Barclay Damon has been successfully pursuing a disciplined expansion strategy throughout its platform of offices in major and smaller markets.
