Janice Grubin Featured in Super Lawyers Magazine Article on Career, Coming Out, and LGBTQ+ Representation in the Legal Field

Janice Grubin, Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Practice Area co-chair, who was selected to the 2021 New York Metro Super Lawyers list in the Bankruptcy Business category, was featured in the article “Dollars to Donuts” in the 2021 issue of New York Metro Super Lawyers Magazine.

The article highlights Janice’s path to practicing bankruptcy law, which began when she applied for a clerkship for a federal bankruptcy judge after she graduated. Notably, in 2005, Janice became trustee of 25 Dunkin’ Donuts stores and a bakery of about 400 employees. “You often don’t know what assets there are when you’re appointed—and you have to create the assets that ultimately get you paid,” Janice said.

In the article, Janice also explains how she didn’t come out to her co-workers until after she and her wife got married in Connecticut, where same-sex marriage was legalized, in 2008. “I wasn’t going to allow my situation to impact my career until I was comfortable that there wouldn’t be any negative repercussions. I never went with anybody to firm functions or at conferences. I was always alone.”

Advocating for LGBTQ+ representation in the legal field is an important cause to Janice. She works to “[improve] the bench both on a state and federal level with people from our community. The LGBTQ community is very substantially underrepresented all over the country. . . . I don’t think that a lot of gay organizations are focused on this.” She notes, however, that progress is being made.
