OCR Launches Website Accessibility Technical Assistance Initiative

The US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) recently announced the launch of "a new technical assistance initiative to assist schools, districts, state education agencies, libraries, colleges, and universities in making their websites and online programs accessible to individuals with disabilities."

OCR is offering a series of website accessibility webinars for information technology professionals that includes suggestions for design decisions and tips for making online programs accessible to individuals with disabilities. Information concerning scheduling and registration for the webinars is available here.

"As more educational opportunities are delivered online, we need to ensure those programs, services, and activities are accessible to everyone," Betsy DeVos, US secretary of education, said. "OCR's technical assistance will help us continue to forge important partnerships with schools for the benefit of students and parents with disabilities."

On a related note, Barclay Damon recently published a legal alert discussing the growing trend of website accessibility litigation against colleges and universities.
