Barry Manna concentrates his legal practice on patent, trademark, copyright matters, and trade secret matters, with an emphasis on the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications. Barry has drafted and prosecuted more than 100 utility patent applications in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, and electrical fields, including nanotechnology, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), integrated circuits, wind turbines, fuel cells, medical devices, telecommunication systems and components, computer hardware and software, business methods, image sensing devices and circuitry, loading dock equipment, gun cleaning systems, commercial and residential refrigeration systems, and aerospace propulsion systems.
Barry has significant experience working with business leaders to develop and protect intellectual property assets. As in-house intellectual property counsel for United Technologies Corporation, Barry developed intellectual property strategies with business units to create and maintain zones of protection, negotiated and drafted intellectual property agreements, managed patent committees, directed outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, conducted product clearance studies, and prepared competitor portfolio valuations for M&A activities. As a law firm senior associate, Barry worked closely with business leaders and entrepreneurs to develop and execute patent filing strategies. He conducted inventor interviews, searched prior art, prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the US and foreign patent offices, and kept abreast of competitor patent portfolios.
Barry received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Clarkson University. His engineering career included significant project development experience in high technology programs such as commercial and military aircraft engines, rocket engines and related turbomachinery, and fuel cell systems for the residential, commercial, automotive, and space-based industries, including NASA’s Space Shuttle orbiter.
Barry received his law degree from Western New England College School of Law. Following law school, Barry served as intellectual property counsel for UTC Power, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation. He went on to work as an associate at the Connecticut-based McCormick, Pauling & Huber, then at the now-defunct Marjama, Muldoon, Blasiak, and Sullivan, and most recently as a senior associate at Harris Beach. While at Harris Beach, Barry served as "embedded" IP counsel for a corporate client with global operations and an extensive international patent portfolio.
