County, School District Prevail Against Mining Giant
A county in a Western state was challenged on its property tax assessment for one of the largest mines in the world. The owner of the mine wanted the assessment cut nearly in half, a development that would have reduced the county’s property values by nearly $1 billion and could bring an immediate cost for refunds of up to $65 million.
Our attorneys took up the case on behalf of the county, serving as lead trial counsel for the county and its school district.
At a hearing, the county and school district prevailed. The tribunal not only sided with our clients, but placed a slightly higher valuation on the mine. With that victory, the mine and authorities met and reached a confidential settlement that provided the county and school with necessary funding.
