On July 17, 2012, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the installation of a pilot AM radio broadcast system at two ports-of-entry on the southwest border – Ysleta in El Paso, Texas and Lincoln-Juarez in Laredo, Texas. The system is intended to better communicate border crossing information to land travelers.
As stated in the agency announcement, “CBP believes an informed and educated traveler is an efficient traveler.”
The radio system will broadcast information such as basic border crossing rules and documentation requirements, as well as updated emergency travel information. During this preliminary pilot phase, CBP will monitor the impact of the system with other installation locations on both the northern and southern borders in mind.
